When an artist is in between records but needs to keep momentum going and creativity flowing, one way to do that is to release a teaser single. Here’s a sampling of the work we did for John Frank’s single, its a cover of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car. In our production meetings leading up to the shoot we discussed in length do we want to use a car for the shoot, will it be too cliche, etc. Obviously in the end we opted for no car, open road, keep the focus on John.

Ron wrote the title track to Luke Wilson’s new movie, Henry Poole is Here, directed by the very talented Mark Pellington. Mark also did Ron’s music video and I had the pleasure of creating a series of stills. Ron made it so easy I almost feel bad saying I was “working.” Thanks Ron!

Reportage + Personal Work

I’m not a big fan of being stuck in a rut. Rather than coast by and let creativity get stale I turn to personal work and self assignments to challenge my own way of seeing. This usually involves stripping down to bare bones gear and venturing out into the great wide open (cue Tom Petty). Not my typical go-to style, more reportage, let things happen organically, sit back and observe.

On that same note, being such a visual person I get a ton of inspiration from the movies and music videos. Some people may not be a fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water, but visually its a stunning film with cinematography that is subtly thoughtful. I can relate to the DOP’s POV:

It’s the balance between the familiar and the contrived, the know and the dream, something in your heart and somewhere you want to go.
